Experience Design Philosophy

From print to products to digital media — experience design enables the user to increase their production, comprehension and enjoyment of the products and systems that they use. If you have ever been lost in a hospital due to poor way-finding or had trouble using an electronic device because it didn’t make sense or simply been lost on a website you understand the power of poor design. Unfortunately, that is the norm rather than the exception. My goal is to change that.

When I begin any project I follow three simple rules: Identify, Innovate, Implement. What does that mean? First I identify the factors that need to be addressed. These may range from user needs to developmental media constraints (print, digital, video, etc) and stated business goals for the project.

After the identification phase it is time to innovate. This is where we pull out the stops and say what if. What if we could give the user the best possible experience? What would that experience be? It doesn’t matter if we can actually implement the idea yet. First we have to think big with no budgets and deadlines to hold us back.

Once we have our best plan we have to implement it. This is the time for deadlines, budget and all other confining factors to be added in. This is the most important phase because it provides focus for the big thinking and hones that big idea to a razor edge. Think of it like the banks of a river: a river with out banks is a swamp that slowly stagnates and dies. Without boundaries projects die due to: feature creep, missed deadlines and a whole host of other concerns.

What is Experience Design? The science of empowering the user by identifying their key usability, and functionality requirements, creating an innovative and robust solution to address those concerns, and implementing that solution within the client's time and budget constraints to produce work that is user accessible, usable and fiscally responsible. Both sides win. The client has a best of class solution and the user receives an empowering product that enhances their interaction and provides them with the tools to accomplish their tasks.

Whether I am working as a consultant or as part of a corporate team — my goal for every project is to provide the user with tools that empower them to succeed at whatever it is they are doing. This may be buying a product, researching, learning, playing a game or simply performing essential job functions. No matter what the paradigm — if the user is the focus — the project that uses Experience Design skillfully to empower the target user will succeed.

~Sean

Sean, it looks great [Modular CSS Platform], very nice work. At my last job, this sort of seamless integration was sorely lacking and was starting to become quite the headache (clients were just starting to ask for their own branded version of our product). It’s great that we have somebody seriously thinking about this stuff from the beginning, and doing it with skill.

Thanks.

I would like to commend the development team for all it has achieved to date. To design & develop a new platform so speedily is amazingly. To excel at that goal and build such a flexible framework, providing hooks for many of the future needs we know we will have, really gives the business leaders of the company a chance to succeed. We may have a ways to go to optimize and customize the platform as we’d all like, but to get us to this phase, and to allow Adventure Central that chance, is a stellar accomplishment.

Thank you for providing this solid foundation for Adventure Central’s future.

Regards,

Adam

Wade, Chris and Sean – Great job and work on developing, designing, implementing our new channels!!! The work you have all done in getting these channels up, improving the search capabilities, making it visually appealing and deploying things to that will lead to increased traffic are awesome to see.

The result? WE HAVE HAD OUR FIRST TWO BOOKINGS THROUGH OUR CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These 2 bookings earn us the same fee as 30 bookings through other channels. That is quite a difference and something we should be very proud of.

Great job!

Folks,

Just because we’ve become used to this level of commitment and excellence from Sean is no reason not to recognize it for what it is. Sean has (with minimal input) taken on a massive amount of work; researching, designing and prototyping an instance that could be next generation Adventure Web (based upon state of the art, state of the industry, and his own expertise). He injected our solution into the Orbitz look and feel, and has captured the essence of their marketing efforts of contextual advertising and community. Further, Sean did this whilst continuing to develop Flex skills, and hence moving our development efforts in the right direction.

This was a great effort, and very valuable to helping Adventure Central’s continued momentum. I’d like to personally commend his effort, his commitment, and once again appreciate his expertise. Adventure Central has its best opportunity to work with Orbitz in large part due to Sean’s contribution.

Regards,

Adam

I've know Sean Bell for about 7 years at this point. I hired him to do my first web-site back in 1998 and had him re-do the site in 2003.

I can't say enough good things aobut Sean and the site he has created for me. In my business, residential real estate sales, I am hit up with offers for cookie-cutter web-sites just about every week. I opted not to go that route because I was looking for something different, and that I could control. Sean has created that - I have yet to find another web-site similar to mine.

My goal for re-hiring Sean to revamp my web-site a couple of years ago was to drive traffic to my IDX site. IDX was relatively new back then and it allowed potential buyers to sign up and view all the homes that I could view on the MLS (Multiple Listing System). As my industry changes, there is a pressing need to stay on top of technology, or sales will suffer. Anyway, I told Sean what my main goal was and he designed the site to help me get people to sign up for "homecards" (the IDX system). We kicked this off in January '04 and to date (Aug '05), I have had over 300 people sign up for homecards and have netted over $100,000 in gross sales due to this. Not only did Sean help me with the site, he also advised me how to drive more traffic to this site by using Google, Overture (Now Yahoo Marketing), Enhance Interactive, etc... to buy keywords and generate results. Sean has really helped me to stay on top of the technology curve and I would recommend him to anyone looking to brand themselves and stand out in a crowd.

I can't tell you how many times this has happened - I get a phone call from someone that I did not know previously, and they said that they called me because they loved my web-site. I did not track the numbers, but this has happened no less than 25 times in the last year. I get compliments from past clients, present clients, and other real estate agents. I even get compliments from sales people - people trying to sell me stuff related to web-services: I've heard this 5-10 times this year - Hey, Sean (also my name), I'm with XYZ Company and I sell XYZ product to realtors. I've got to say that of all the real estate web-sites that I have been on, yours definitely stands out and is one of the best that I've seen.

I can't recommend Sean enough. He has always come through for me and I am totally appreciative of all the work that he has done for me in the past and look forward to continue working with him in the future. Also, feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

October 2004

I hired Sean Bell as a temporary employee to complete some fast-track deliverables related to a new web interface for a large Fortune 100 company. This company required that a very aggressive schedule be met in order to win significant future business with them (several million dollars). Sean delivered a high-quality product within the deadline, working 12+ hours a day, including weekends, and a few all-nighters.

I was very impressed with Sean's ability to quickly assimilate the customer's requirements and blend in seamlessly with our developement team. It was like he had worked here for years. Sean demonstrated excellent leadership, having no authority, by motivating some of the more junior developers to "step up" their game. In addition, Sean demonstrated a willingness and an understanding that, at times, you must "do what it takes" to get the job done.

Another quality that impressed me about Sean was his ability to tactfully point out areas that we could improve. This was demonstrated by the customer's enthusiastic approval of his design change recommendations. In addition, Sean's artistic background and his understanding of branding issues enabled us to create the new web interface with the same look-and-feel as the customer's global web portal. This became a key factor in impressing the customer's Senior Vice President. In the end, our web interface outshined the competition and the customer will be awarding us more of the future business than initially planned.

I highly recommend Sean Bell. He will be a great addition to your team.

Sincerely,
David Desormeaux
General Manager
DataTrax Systems

January 2001

As a founding member of the company from June 1999 through January 2001, Sean Bell has been a key contributor to the design and development of a series of BlueCompass internet initiatives.

Beginning in June 1999, Sean lead the design and development fo the initial web presence establishing ColoradoSkiing.com as a leading destination for leisure travel in Colorado. Following the launch of ColoradoSkiing, Sean repurposed the ColoradoSkiing design templates and constructed a new site, SummerColorado.com. This new site was launched in record time due to the template driven approach that Sean used in the contruction of the ColoradoSkiing site.

With the expansion of the ColoradoSkiing business model to include new regions (such as Tahoe, New England, Whistler BC and others) and a new customer base (travel agents), Sean developed a new corporate image campaign for BlueCompass, the newly renamed company. This initiative included a new corporate logo, letterhead and business card design. He also assisted with the design of new websites such as BlueCompass.com and AgentOutpost.com, as well as an extensive banner ad campaign.

Sean is an extremely hard worker and a dedicated contributor to any project that he is a part of.

Sincerely,
Todd McGuire

April 1997

It gives me great pleasure to write this letter of reference for Sean Bell. I have know Mr. Bell for more than three years. Sean will graduate with a BFA degree in Graphic Design here at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. I have worked directly with Sean in graphic design, typography, and portfolio courses within my department. I have also consulted with him on illustration and multimedia projects outside of scheduled courses.

Sean Bell's portfolio (as you will see) demonstrates a wide range of traditional and digital skills. Most important, this designer's work is conceptual and demonstrates his ability to solve visual communication problems. Within the Department of Graphic Design, Mr. Bell has produced communication pieces for small business and non-profit clients. Outside the college, he has interned with Mr. George S. Lim, Principal/Manager of Tangram Design. Through this internship, Mr. Bell has been able to broaden his knowledge of environmental graphic design.

Concerning his technical expertise, Mr. Bell displays a solid understanding of the Macintosh environment. He has worked as a technician and teaching assistant under the supervision of Jeanette Wiffin, Director of Technical Services. He is an excellent communicator and has actively assisted his fellow students with their numerous hardware and software problems.

Sean Bell is an extremely marketable candidate for a position within the graphic design community. He displays a professional work ethic, high quality portfolio samples, Macintosh expertise and excellent communications skills. It has been a pleasure to work with him here at the college.

I would be happy to provide any further information via interview.

Sincerely,
Martin Mendelsberg
